During this period, a Sukhothai royal named ‘Yutthisathira’ or ‘Yutthisathian’
sought allegiance with the Lanna region and actively contributed to their war efforts,
eventually earning him the position of governor of Phayao. Throughout his reign,
he diligently governed the city and ensured the continued practice of Buddhism.
                                                                  nd
Lanna region became powerful until the early 22 century B.C., when the
Burmese of the Bago region occupied the entire territory and governed for at least 200
years. The role of Phayao declined during this period until the Rattanakosin period.
In 2330 B.E. (A.D. 1787), the failed rebellion of six upper northern cities against

Burma was mentioned in the chronicles of Mueang Yang in Chiang Saen. The governor of
Phayao then escaped to Lampang and continued to perform duty with Bangkok in the
           Rattanakosin period
Under the reign of King Rama III (2367-2394 B.E. or A.D. 1824–1851), Phayao

was thoughtfully revitalized, becoming an important frontier town alongside Lampang.,
including clearing and renovating the temples under the lead of Chao Luangwong and
           Chao Luang Yot, respectively.
During the reign of King Rama V (2411-2453 B.E. or A.D. 1868-1910), significant

administrative reforms were implemented, and the Thesaphiban system was established.
Phayao was therefore underneath the protection of the Lao Chiang province which
later evolved to Payao province. Not long after, tensions emerged as certain some
Ngeo ethnic groups and their followers within the city opposed the authority of Phayao.
